Perhaps the most well known and desirable of the sea hollies, as scattered through gardens by Ellen Willmott. A Winter dormant biennial found from Northern Turkey to the Caucasus. Flat rosettes of dark green, heart shaped leaves grow for a year or more before thrusting up branching stems bearing cones of small pale blue flowers surrounded by a ruff of prickly, metallic silver bracts.

A delicate little cool season grass reveling in moist shaded positions. It's soft, bright chartreuse, 5mm wide blades form a loose clumps which given their gentle nature are indispensable planted with small woodland bulbs such as Cyclamen coum or on it's own to light up that damp shaded spot. It also makes an ideal winter filler for that prize, potted, Summer growing bulb.

| A carnivorous vine from the highlands of Asia, with leathery, mid green, lance shaped leaves, up to 30cm long, produced alternately along slender, wiry stems, become woody with age. The squat, pale green, heavily mottled red pitchers, up to 15cm high, which trap and digest insects, are borne at the tip of the leaf tendrils which the plant also uses to climb. Racemes of uninteresting petalless green and brown flowers are usually produced in Autumn in Perth.

Absolutely gorgeous is the only way I can describe this South African Oxalis. From the onset of Autumn rain, until mid Spring, an endless procession of 1cm, yellow centred, soft orange, five petalled, funnel shaped flowers, clothe the feathery foliaged, mat forming stems. |
